Meredith Blackburn is a dancer, teacher and choreographer who has been a member of the Dance faculty, School of Performing Arts, Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts and MCM since 1996. Primarily a lecturer in the Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance) she has also taught in the Dance Honors, Post Graduate and Post Graduate Diploma Programs. She was a Contemporary Dance staff member at the VCA Secondary School for a decade. Currently the coordinator of the final year of the dance under-graduate program her lecturing encompasses Contemporary Dance Technique, Choreography, Dance Analysis and Dance theoretical studies as well as cross disciplinary studies in Performing Arts. Meredith designed, coordinated and taught in the Post Graduate Diploma of Contemporary Dance Teaching. She was the recipient of the VCA Excellence in Teaching Award in 2003. Alongside her history as a dance practitioner Meredith has directed community arts projects and conferences. As a Special Projects Officer she ran the former VCA Mentor Program for graduates across all art forms. Meredith coordinated Options 96’ at the VCA, a biennial Australian Tertiary Dance Conference and Festival which coincided with the Green Mill and World Dance Alliance Conference and Festival that year. She has considerable expertise in dance content, curriculum and course development for a range of contexts. While a VCA+MCM faculty member Meredith has performed in Europe with VCA graduates and students in Marc Bogaert’s Four Seasons and in the choreographic works for Post Graduate and Masters in Dance students Helena Yoeng and Bagyrana Popov. She also performed in Anna Smith’s award winning Red Rain which was a central part of Professor Shirley McKechnie’s ARC Research Unspoken Knowledges, the Keene Taylor Theatre Project and Tracie Mitchell’s film Under the Weather. Meredith has a Bachelor in Education (Secondary) from Victoria College, Rusden, majoring in Dance and History. She has worked as a teacher and dancer with Dance in Education Companies Feats Unlimited in Darwin, and D’Note Dance Company in London. The former worked in primary and secondary schools as well as in various community contexts in the Northern Territory. Meredith was a dancer with Diversions, the National Contemporary Dance Company. She was the Artistic Director of Graffiti Dance Company in Ballarat in 1994 and has lectured in dance at Monash University, Ballarat School of Mines and Industry and at Victoria College, Rusden (now Deakin University) where she was Head of the Dance Department. As an independent dance artist Meredith has presented her own choreographic work in Melbourne, Holland and Britain.
