Teaching Workshop breaks new ground in design technology

In a short six months, the Victorian College of the Arts’ Teaching Workshop has transcended from an industrial blue-collar workshop to become a cutting edge research facility where manufacturing outcomes are unlimited. Around 700 students from visual art, production, and film and television will now come together over the course of a year to share ideas and build in specific process spaces, including a central construction area, a welding and foundry room, a wet mould room, a wood machining shop including a special sanding room. The heritage-listed Old Police Hospital is born again

The former Victoria Police Hospital, opened in 1914 on the corner of St Kilda Road and Southbank Boulevard, was officially re-opened by Vice-Chancellor Professor Glyn Davis last Monday tonight after a year-long refurbishment of the heritage-listed building. The “Old Police Hospital”, as it is now called, provides accommodation for the Dean’s office and administrative units who are lucky to have it as a Faculty Hub. Read the full story >>

The inaugural Rosemary and John Hopkins Award

Conductor and educator John Hopkins AM OBE (19 July 1927 – 30 September 2013), an iconic figure in Australian music, was the first Dean of Music at the VCA, the director of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and later returned to lead the conducting program at the Melbourne Conservatorium. The Rosemary and John Hopkins Award, worth $2,500, has been set up for a conductor of any age, to assist with a youth or community music project. Apply now >>

Nora Niasari announced as TV director’s attachment on Matchbox Pictures production Secret City

The Australian Directors Guild (ADG), Matchbox Pictures and Screen Australia today announced VCA alumna director Nora Niasari (MFTV 2014) as the attachment to ellow alumna Emma Freeman (BFTV 2000) on the Matchbox TV series Secret City for Foxtel. The industry incentive program is funded by Screen Australia and managed by the ADG for emerging directors to develop their craft. Read more.

War dance flash mob in support of Adam Goodes

Staff and students from the VCA & MCM came together in Federation Square on Tuesday 4 August at 2.10pm for a flash mob, in solidarity with Adam Goodes.  Richard Frankland, Head of the Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development, led a war cry to call for an end to racism in Australia. The event received widespread media coverage from The GuardianThe Age, SBSABC and broadly across social media channels such as Twitter.

Donna Hensler awarded Cornelius Regan Trust grant

Congratulations to Donna Hensler, Screen Production Coordinator in Film and Television, who has been awarded a $5,000 professional development Cornelius Regan Trust grant. Donna will be using the funds to visit leading University archives and Film Centres to contribute to the research and development of VCA Film and Television’s digital archive project which will digitize, preserve and provide open access to its films, dating back to 1967. 

Barb Bolt awarded Office for Teaching and Learning Grant

Associate Professor Barb Bolt has been awarded a $215,000 Office for Teaching and Learning Grant for her project “Developing new approaches to ethics and research integrity training through challenges posed by creative practice research”.  A/Prof Bolt will lead the project team from the University of Melbourne, working with researchers from Deakin University, RMIT University, The University of New South Wales, University of Wollongong and Federation University Australia.
