Cattapan receives Bulgari Art Award

Congratulations to A/Prof Jon Cattapan who picked up the Bulgari Art Award for his artwork Imagine a Raft (Hard Rubbish 4+5), a triptych painted over a five year period. The prize, one of Australia’s most valuable, consists of $50,000 for the painting acquisition by the Art Gallery of NSW, and a $30,000 residency in Italy. The Age reports.

Boston Metro Opera Composition Competition

Glass animator Thom Fraser

Glass animator Thom Fraser (MFTV (Animation) 2006) has been announced as the winner of the inaugural CREATE STUDIO competition in Sydney. Thom first discovered the technique in his film studies at the VCA, and began experimenting in the rare method which involves animating hundreds of individual glass paintings.  He created much of his winning artwork over ten days of non-stop painting, captured in the 30-second promo. As the winner, Thom receives $10,000 prize money and will have his work displayed on a Kings Cross billboard from mid-March.

Opera graduate Adam Lyon is about to get the break of a lifetime in his first professional production, as leading man for King Kong, due to open in Melbourne in June this year.  Watch this story from the ABC that takes him back to his hometown of Bendigo where his love of musical theatre began. Creative arts graduates awarded $200,000 in scholarships

'Summer Suit' hits world stage

Leon Salom, Lecturer in Design at the VCA was recently Production & Costume Designer for Aussie short film 'Summer Suit'. It now hits the world stage after being selected for both the prestigious Berlin Film Festival and Slamdance Screen Festival in Utah. Watch the trailer here
