Two of our theatre lecturers, Rinske Ginsberg and Tony Smith, were in Singapore this week with our 2nd year theatre students for the 8th Asia Pacific Bureau Theatre Schools Festival & Directors Conference at LASALLE College of the Arts. They spent a week exchanging training methodologies with other schools and participating in workshops and other conference activities. You can see a photo album of our students performing here.

Ariel Kleiman releases debut feature film – Partisan

Partisan, the debut feature film from Melbourne director, Ariel Kleiman, who graduated from the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), will be released theatrically in Australia this week (Thursday 28 May, 2015).

Congratulations to Head of Jazz & Improvisation Alex Pertout and Nilusha Dassenaike who made a global splash at the fabled Tropicana Club in Havana last week when their album ALEX & NILUSHA 'Tales To Tell' won the Premio Internacional at the Cubadisco Music Awards. Read more>>
Fly Away Peter: a new work by Elliott Gyger

The Sydney Chamber Opera’s production of Fly Away Peter premiered at Carriageworks last weekend. Based on David Malouf’s classic novel, the opera is composed by Elliott Gyger (MCM Lecturer in Composition) with a libretto by Pierce Wilcox. This new contemporary opera tells the story of Jim Saddler, a young birdwatcher from Queensland thrust into the nightmare of the Western Front during WWI. Read the Sydney Morning Herald review>>

Graduates join Screen Australia Talent Escalator

Screen Australia's Talent Escalator program will offer emerging directors Corrie Chen (BFTV (Hons) 2008, MFTV 2011) and Billie Pleffer (GDFTV 2012) an opportunity to work with industry experts to gain firsthand practical experience. Corrie will work as a director’s attachment to Shawn Seet on the Channel 7 mini-series Peter Allen: Not the Boy Next Door. Billie will be attached to director Glendyn Ivin (Gallipoli, Puberty Blues, Last Ride) on the six-part miniseries The Beautiful Lie. Read more.
Lou Hubbard wins Guirguis New Art Prize

Head of Photography at the VCA, artist Lou Hubbard impressed the judges to take out the 2015 Guirguis New Art Prize, a prestigious $20,000 art prize, for her work Dead Still Standing at the opening of the GNAP15 exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ballarat on Friday April 10. Read more.
Winners of the 32nd Green Room Awards

The winners of the 32nd Annual Green Room Awards, Melbourne's annual awards ceremony for the performing arts, were announced last Monday night at the Comedy Theatre. Amongst the winners there were many of our alumni and staff, including Alyson Campbell (VCA Head of Graduate Studies in Theatre) who won best director for The Trouble With Harry (MKA, Darebin Arts’ Speakeasy, Melbourne Festival) which also won best production in the Independent Theatre category. VCA representatives at Cannes Film Festival

Cannes Film Festival word is out! Film director Justin Kurzel (GDFTV(Narrative) 2004) is in the official competition with Macbeth (2015), with cinematography by Adam Arkapaw (BFTV 2006) and starring Elizabeth Debicki (BDA 2011) as Lady Macduff. Representing the VCA among the 18 film school titles in the Cinéfondation selection is Qiu Yang’s Ri guang zhi xia (Under the Sun). Read more.
Fashion designer Valentino takes Victorian artist's work to catwalk

Paintings by Australian artist and VCA alum Esther Stewart are gracing garments designed by internationally renowned Italian fashion label Valentino. The 26-year-old has recently returned from Paris where her colourful geometric creations were rolled out on the runway. Read more.
