Lou Hubbard wins Guirguis New Art Prize

Head of Photography at the VCA, artist Lou Hubbard impressed the judges to take out the 2015 Guirguis New Art Prize, a prestigious $20,000 art prize, for her work Dead Still Standing at the opening of the GNAP15 exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ballarat on Friday April 10. Read more.

The winners of Melbourne’s 32nd Annual Green Room Awards, Melbourne's annual awards ceremony for the performing arts, were announced last Monday night at the Comedy Theatre. Amongst the winners there were many of our alumni and staff, including Alyson Campbell (VCA Head of Graduate Studies in Theatre) who won best director for The Trouble With Harry (MKA, Darebin Arts’ Speakeasy, Melbourne Festival) which also won best production in the Independent Theatre category.

VCA representatives at Cannes Film Festival

Cannes Film Festival word is out! Film director Justin Kurzel (GDFTV(Narrative) 2004) is in the official competition with Macbeth (2015), with cinematography by Adam Arkapaw (BFTV 2006) and starring Elizabeth Debicki (BDA 2011) as Lady Macduff. Representing the VCA among the 18 film school titles in the Cinéfondation selection is Qiu Yang’s Ri guang zhi xia (Under the Sun). Read more.


Fashion designer Valentino takes Victorian artist's work to catwalk

Paintings by Australian artist and VCA alum Esther Stewart are gracing garments designed by internationally renowned Italian fashion label Valentino. The 26-year-old has recently returned from Paris where her colourful geometric creations were rolled out on the runway. Read more.

Nicholas Carter, 29, named ASO Chief Conductor

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra today announced the appointment of  MCM alumnus Nicholas Carter (BMus, 2007) as its next Principal Conductor. At 29, Carter will be one of the youngest leaders of an Australian state orchestra ever and it will be the first time an Australian has been appointed to such a post since Stuart Challender was named Chief Conductor of the Sydney Symphony in 1987. Today, the new ‘Brian Brown Recording Studio’ was launched by the Minister for Creative Industries, Martin Foley MP at the University of Melbourne’s Southbank campus – home to the Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts and Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (VCA and MCM). Professor Anne Boyd AM receives Sir Bernard Heinze Award

Last Friday March 20, at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Professor Barry Conyngham (Dean of the Faculty of VCA and MCM) presented the 2015 Sir Bernard Heinze Memorial Award to the University of Sydney’s Professor Anne Boyd AM.  As one of Australia’s most distinguished composers and music educators, the award recognises Professor Boyd’s outstanding contribution to music in Australia.

Deborah Cheetham inducted on to Victorian Women's Honour Roll

Twenty-two women were inducted onto the Victorian Honour Roll of Women at a ceremony at Federation Square on Wednesday 11 March 2015. Among them was opera singer and composer Ms Deborah Cheetham AO, the VCA & MCM's Associate Dean (Indigenous Development).

The annual induction recognises the achievements and contributions of remarkable Victorian women who have demonstrated leadership and excellence in their field of expertise, interest or endeavour.The Honour Roll was first established in 2001 and contains over 500 names.


MTC's Endgame rich in VCA talent

Samuel Beckett's Endgame at the MTC holds much alumni talent in its creative ranks. It is directed by Sam Strong (GDipDramArt (Direction) 2004) and stars Luke Mullins (BDrama 2001) with set design by visual artist Callum Morton (BFA 1998) and costume design by Eugyeene Teh ( MProd 2008).
